SoCal Supermoto Class

I was wanting to do something different and had been toying around with taking a class or track day of some type. I did a bunch of research on what is available around me and the choices are pretty good. All of them require some level of either tire condition, safety gear or bike preparation that made it tough to do with my work schedule. In trying to balance all of those factors, I read an article on Supermoto Racing and schools. I grew up riding dirt bikes and the idea of racing around a go kart track on a lightweight, powerful bike sounded excellent. SoCal Supermoto has a full package of track fees and rental bikes and only required the gear that I already had. They even have group discounts for four or more people. I was in. I convinced one of my buddies to go with me and we set out before dawn to get to Riverside, CA in time for the class.

Here is the bike I had for the day. A Suzuki DRZ 400 in full Supermoto trim. They were a bit clapped out as you would expect from rental bikes intended to be used on the track and dirt by a bunch of people that have never done it before.

A supermoto has had the wheels and tires converted over to street spec. Big, fat, sticky tires on 17" rims really make for some fun. A powerful, lightweight bike with lots of grip.

Part of the SoCal Supermoto package is lunch, a T-Shirt and a bunch of pictures. These are courtesy of Brian of SoCal Supermoto and they make me look faster than I was.

In the afternoon they opened up the dirt section and we had to contend with jumps and traction changes while zipping the bike around the track. I dumped the bike on a berm which was my only incident of the day. My gear did its job and I got right back on and finished the session.

All in all, if you get the chance head over and see the guys at SoCal Supermoto and take the class. You'll have a great time and maybe you'll be bitten by the track bug like I was. It was the this class that has led me to want to try prepping the Ninja for the track and to throw my hat into the motorcycle racing ring.
